Experience the Lindau Fair from a Bird's Eye View
When the Lindau Fair transforms the island into a colorful festival from November 6 to 10, 2026, the historic Mangturm will open its doors. During the visit, guests climb the steps of this medieval landmark and experience the hustle and bustle of the fair, the rooftops of Lindau's old town, and Lake Constance from a unique perspective.
History to Touch at the Harbor Promenade
The Mangturm was built in the 12th century as part of the medieval city fortifications. With its arrow slits, this approximately 35-meter-high stone structure once served as a watch and signal tower at the endpoint of the city wall. Previously, the tower was surrounded by water and played an important role in protecting Lindau's lake harbor.
89 Steps to the Viewing Experience
The ascent leads through the historic interior of the tower to the tower room. There, the view opens up over the colorful buzz of the fair, the island town, and the expansive landscape of Lake Constance. The 89 steps make the journey itself a small discovery experience and provide a direct impression of medieval construction methods.
A Landmark with a Colorful History
After the New Lighthouse was completed in 1856, the Mangturm lost its former function as a watch and signal tower. The building was raised by one floor and received its distinctive roof with glazed tiles. In 1914, the former caretaker's apartment on the upper floor was converted into an observation room. A colorful ceiling with coats of arms, inscriptions, and medallions tells the story of Lindau's tumultuous history.
Fair, Old Town, and Lake Constance in View
The visit combines local history with a vibrant atmosphere. Around 140 merchants, 60 exhibitors, and numerous visitors define the Lindau Fair 2026. After the tour of the Mangturm, the harbor promenade, Maximilianstraße, the Old Town Hall, and the historic streets of the island town invite further discoveries.
Conclusion: A Unique View of Lindau
The visit to the Mangturm offers history to touch, an impressive ascent, and an extraordinary panorama over the Lindau Fair. Those who want to discover the city from a new perspective and connect cultural heritage with a festive atmosphere should plan a visit to the harbor square.
